Facial Hair removal is a big business – and can be pricey. The entire industry grew by 7% between 2010 and 2015, and that number just keeps climbing.
It’s very nice to get pampered from time to time and blow a paycheck on getting a great wax job.
The thing is, who’s got that kind of money to spend on a regular basis? Plus, you’ve got to research the salon and book an appointment.
If you try to go the permanent route, that’s definitely going to cost you – on average $192 for each visit, and you’ll have to go back more than once.
While you can cover up your unshaven legs in some cute jeans, as a woman, facial hair can be embarrassing.
Don’t sweat it – we’ve got 15 great tricks to make facial hair removal easy and stress-free!
1. Indian Nettle and Turmeric
Indian nettle and turmeric are two anti-inflammatory agents found in their cuisine and home remedies.
You can get rid of unwanted facial hair with a paste made from one teaspoon each of ground up nettles and turmeric powder.
Simply apply where you need it to go and leave on overnight for four to six weeks.
You’ll see the facial hair start to disappear after a while.
For faster facial hair removal, many people turn to wax but sugaring is a more gentle remedy.
Get a quarter cup of water going on the stove. Once it heats up, add 1/4 cup of lemon juice and 2 cups of plain sugar.
When it starts to bubble, turn the heat to low and let it simmer. Once it turns amber and cools off a little, it’s ready to use.
Apply it just like a wax but without any strips. You can use the same piece over and over again and save leftovers for next time you need it.
3. Spearmint Tea
Drinking a cooling cup of spearmint tea helps balance your hormones and reduce the appearance of unwanted hair.
Just drink a glass daily and that’s it! Who knew facial hair removal could be so easy?
4. Apricot Scrub
Don’t go store bought – make your own for the most effective facial hair removal face wash.
Grind dried apricots into a powder, about 1/2 cup then mix it with at least a teaspoon of honey.
Both honey and apricot reduce the appearance of marks, blemishes, and facial hair. Leave this mix on for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off.
5. Papaya and Turmeric
Papaya has a natural lightening property that can also help with facial hair removal.
Make a mixture with the pulp of half a papaya and add some turmeric to it. Leave this intensive mask on for around 15-30 minutes for best results.
6. Egg Whites Facial Hair Removal Mask
This is a two-in-one treatment because egg whites are packed with protein, the cornerstone of great skin.
Take the white of one egg and then mix it together with a tablespoon of sugar and a half a tablespoon of cornstarch.
Apply to your face and then let it dry. When you go to peel it off, it will take any stray hairs with it!
7. Honey Lemon Face Mask
Honey is gentle on your skin and lemon helps lighten unwanted hairs.
Simply mix four tablespoons of honey with one tablespoon of lemon to create this sticky – but effective – facial hair removal mask.
Apply and let sit for 15-20 minutes, then wipe away with a washcloth and lukewarm water.
You’ll want to use this mask at least two to three times a week for best results.
8. Oatmeal Scrub
If you want to take the aforementioned honey lemon mask to the next level, try transforming it into a scrub!
This time go one-to-one with honey and lemon, using only a tablespoon of each.
Add to that half a teaspoon of coarsely ground oatmeal. Apply to your face like a mask at first and let it do its thing for 15-20 minutes.
When it’s time to take it off, gently scrub your face against the direction of the unwanted hair.
Oatmeal is a natural scrub, much less abrasive than many exfoliating store brands but still gets the job done.
9. Basil and Onion Facial Hair Removal Paste
Here’s one you’ve probably got hanging around your kitchen herb garden.
Take 10 basil leaves and the membranes of two onions. It might be hard to get the membranes but put a little effort into it and you won’t be sorry.
Use only fresh basil, too. Dried basil won’t work for this wonderful paste.
Mix them together and apply to any hair you want to get rid of. Let it sit for about 20 minutes.
You might feel a slight burning if you leave it on too long so be careful with this mask.
Apply this fragrant paste once a day for a month to see a decrease in facial hair.
10. Focus On Phytoestrogens
Phytoestrogens are parts of plants and vegetables that can help stabilize your hormones.
Many times, unwanted facial hair shows up because your body is out of balance.
Include a few phytoestrogens – like licorice tea, flax, fennel, and soybeans – into your diet and see if that helps with your facial hair removal woes.
Diet plays a big role in our hormones. Make sure to eat whole foods and drink lots of water too.
11. Barley Scrub
If the previously mentioned oatmeal scrub isn’t doing it for you, you should try this barley scrub.
Mix one tablespoon of barley powder, milk, and lime juice.
Apply to your face and leave it on for about 30 minutes. This is going to get into the roots of your unwanted facial hair.
Rinse off with lukewarm water and you’re good to go. Use it three to four times a week.
12. Molasses Wax
You can make a great salon-style wax at home with sugar and water. It’s a bit more intense than sugaring so be warned!
Get a microwaveable bowl and put a cup of sugar in it, then pour enough molasses to cover it.
Stir, then let it sit for a while before microwaving for two to three minutes.
Let it cool so that it doesn’t burn your skin, but make sure it’s still warm enough to be flexible and grip the hairs.
Apply to your hair, and just like with wax, use a cloth or a strip to help rip it off. Facial hair removal with molasses wax can be just that easy!
13. Peel-Off Gelatin Mask
You can use gelatin for facial hair removal just like egg whites. The sticky mixture helps grip the hair and rip it out.
Use one tablespoon of unflavored gelatin and a few drops of either lavender oil or lime juice. Add two to three tablespoons of milk and put the mix in a microwavable bowl.
Microwave the bowl for only 15 seconds. Don’t let it get too hot or gooey.
Before it sets, quickly apply it to your face and leave it on for at most 15 minutes.
Once it dries, peel it off and watch facial hair, blackheads, and dead skin comes right off!
14. Orange Lemon Peel Mask
This is one of the sweetest-smelling facial hair removal methods ever.
There are quite a few ingredients but here’s what you need:
- One teaspoon powdered dry orange peel
- One teaspoon powdered dry lemon peel
- One teaspoon oatmeal
- One teaspoon almond meal
- One to two teaspoons of olive oil
- One teaspoon of rose water
Mix it together into a paste, apply to your face, and leave it on for about five minutes.
When you’re ready to take it off, spend about five minutes massaging it into your face.
This facial hair removal technique smells great and is extra-nourishing for your thirsty, dry skin.
15. Lavender Tea Tree Oil Facial Hair Removal Blend
Androgen is a hormone responsible for secondary sex development and affects your skin.
It can cause blemishes, extra oil production, and, unfortunately, extra hair where you don’t want it, especially for women.
Lavender and tea tree oils are thought to have anti-androgen properties and can help with removing unwanted facial hair.
Add together one teaspoon of lavender oil and about four to six drops of tea tree oil, then blend together.
Apply with a cotton ball on any facial hair you want to get rid of two to three times a day. It might take up to three months to see results but it’s worth it.
Bonus: lavender and tea tree oil can help clear your sinuses and keep headaches at bay too.
